Making a fool of yourself is a great learning tool

In my quest to learn as much as possible about Internet Marketing and how to create a successful online business, I stumbled across a great internet marketing forum called the Warrior Forum.

What I find remarkable about most of these people is that they are so generous with their time in answering a total beginner’s questions about marketing on the internet. These are men and women who created successful online businesses in all areas. Half the time I suspect that they are bored stiff with answering the same questions over and over again, yet still they patiently talk us ‘newbies’ through something until we have got it into our thick skulls.

This forum is a microcosm of society online. Most people that arrive at the Warrior Forum have no idea what to do and nine times out of ten end up getting their posts deleted, or in a worst case scenario banned because they could not be bothered to read the rules first and then dive in and start with the questions and/or lectures.

I joined the forum in July this year and the amount of information that I have got is equivalent to a year’s education in these three short months. There is no doubt though, that I still have a lot to learn about this area of business. Today was a classic example.

Another newbie asked a question about PR (which is Google Page Rank). I only learnt yesterday what it meant but the “Fools rush in where Angels fear to tread” principle applied and I promptly answered her question with my new found knowledge pouring forth onto the page.

In the very next reply I was gently contradicted by Alexa and Dave and the correct answer given. My answer was totally wrong. I was so embarrassed that I wanted to shut my computer down and throw my modem away. But – I learnt something new which I did not know yesterday. My comment to the forum that the quickest way to learn is to make a fool of yourself is true.

I will never forget that little snippet of information. Ever!

It always amazes me as I watch and ‘read’ the people in the forum how many people are so fixated on the quick ‘Get Rich’ solution to solving their problems instead of taking the time to learn from the successful men and women on the forum. They are so quick to trash potential solutions to their problems without taking the time to really implement a plan and test it. They complain that they are being scammed or lied to about the results of a particular method of creating income.

So here’s my suggestion to you for the week. If you are learning something new this week you need to do the following:

1) Ask questions.

2) Listen to and absorb the answers.

3) Evaluate whether the answers resonate with you or apply to your particular situation.

4) If it does then apply it. If not, say thank you and move on without bashing the person who took the time answer the question.

5) Don’t be afraid to make a fool of yourself. You can only increase your knowledge and experience.

6) Start at number 1 again.

I would love to hear of some examples where you made a fool of yourself and learnt something from it?

Have a stunning week.

Why get your own domain? Become web wise!

Domains or domain names are the equivalent of a physical or postal addressbut they relate to to the internet and are used by companies, organisations and even persons that give them a certain amount of authority over a part of the internet. They are names that relate to Internet Protocols. Simple, as well as specific hostnames or related domain names help you locate a particular domain that you may be searching for.

In today’s internet era, a domain name is a part of the start up process of any business. It gives the business organization a base to act upon. Not only does it increase accountability but it provides a business with a medium through which the organization can create its own intranet. The intranet in turn is used to give out employee-subordinate email ids that may be used within the company and with its subsequent clients. Once a domain has been bought, it can be used to post information and update the workings of the company on the internet so other people can be informed of the function and avail their services- thus increasing the business. Having a personalised domain protects the brand nameof the business by avoiding duplication.

Buying a domain is a fairly simply process. You must go onto websites that provide the services to help buy a domain (I included a list of sites where you can either buy or your own domain or get reputable company to do it for you). A list of preferred domain names must be prepared in advance and then entered to see which domain name is available. When you get a domain name of your choice, you just got lucky. Once a domain name is chosen, the website will quote a price in accordance with the level of the domain name opted for. This fee includes a payment which would be made to Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), who oversee the name and number systems of the internet and charge annual fees for the sale and use of a particular domain.

There is one problem that people may sometimes face with a domain. The domain names, that are case sensitive or that may have been misinterpreted by a costumer, may guide them incorrectly to a different website from your own. Thus an organisation must take special care providing customers with their domain information to make sure that the clients are not confused or misled.

You may also buy an existing domain from its owners. The names and contact details of owners are available on their website. Selling an existing domain is called the domain aftermarket. It is common practice for franchisee companies so that they are able to use the mother company name in their domain and continue working with ensured clientele.

Domains are now an integral part of a business and an organization may seize to operate altogether without a domain because it would cause a massive communication gap inside and outside the business organisation. So if you are thinking of starting up a business, start with your own domain so you can spread the word easily and efficiently and ensure a steady increase in customers. Don’t compromise with your credibility, and register for a personalised domain today. This is the start of your web wisejourney.

ProBlogger does it again!

If you have not heard of Darren Rowse, then you should have. Darren is one of the pioneers of blogging and making money on-line. His previous book “31 Days to build a better blog” is the best book on the market about serious blogging.

31dbbb

I have been following his blog for several years and I cannot begin to tell you how much I have learnt from him.

He has just brought out his new book “ The Blogger’s guide to On-Line Marketing” which is a must-read for anyone who wants to create a successful i.e. income generating blog.

BGOM_300x250px

He wrote this book in conjunction with the “Ninja” who shall remain nameless, where they outline the steps they took to get Darren’s blog so successful.

This practical 31 Step eBook is written for bloggers who want to transition their blogs into businesses. It comes bundled as a kit
with a library of 21 templates and examples. This is rare opportunity to learn from the “Master” of blogging.

I was so excited when I saw this. I immediately knew he was onto something good.

If you are serious about creating a profitable online presence for yourself and/or your business then I would definitely recommend this book for you.

At an investment of $49.99, it is worth every cent.

See for yourself!

What you learn at dinner.

Last week I attended a dinner held by 27Dinner which is a “ movement [that] aims to bring together informed, networked individuals with a common passion for technology, media and business in an informal but valuable real world space”.

Mickey-Minnie-Thanksgiving-Dinner

Eric Edelstein from Evly gave us his insights from his four month visit to Silicon Valley and what he learnt there from venture capitalists. They always asked him three questions and naturally I wanted to know what they were. After a few days tracking him down on Twitter I managed to get the answers from him (thank you Eric).

1) What niche will you target?

Don’t try and target the world. Identify a small niche market that has a specific problem and solve it for them.

2) How will you get traction?

I had no idea what traction was until Darren Smith from SmartR Media explained it to me. In his words,  traction is “… getting 1 customer to buy your product/service, then another, then another. Moving forward, doing business.” (thank you Darren)

3) How will you monetize?

What price will you sell your product or service? What other ways are there to generate income off your website?

The four main points I got out of that presentation were:

            • Solve people’s problems.
            • Target a niche market.
            • Keep it simple.
            • Do it in three months (gasp)

I came away from that dinner absolutely deflated. My entire business plan has to be revamped based on what I learnt that evening. I am not sure if I should be grateful or just plain mad, but I suspect I will be very grateful in the future.

Note to self: You need to get out more often!

Are you ready for huge traffic volumes? What if you are not?

I have been taking part in Maria Gudelis’s Traffic Webinars and I have learnt a huge amount. So much so that I have an information overload and have had to spend days reviewing my notes to ensure I remember everything.

We all want traffic to our blogs and websites, but Maria said something the other day that actually took my breath away. “What if you are not ready for large volumes of traffic?”

Oh come on! Bring it on! How can we not be ready for traffic?

But … listening further I realised she might actually have a point and so I want to tell you about her latest offering. It will help you to avoid mistakes that 99% of all marketer’s make! Just the same kind of mistakes I have been making.

Confessions of a Traffic Addict  is a series of webinars that will teach newbies and experienced on-line marketers to deal with huge volumes of traffic, and then show you how to generate those large volumes.

Conffesions_set4_grey_small

It’s intensive, it’s going to take a lot of work but it is worth it. I believe that this will change my whole online presence in terms of business.

Don’t waste anytime. Training starts on Tuesday the 19th of July.

The best part? The price! It’s $19.00. That’s a really low investment for a huge return. Hope to see you there.

You can see more information on “Confessions of a Traffic Addict” here.

New Blogger Gadget – Social Share for posts

I popped into my Blogger accounts this morning and saw a really nice gadget. Blogger now allows you to add Social Share buttons to your posts.

Here’s how you activate it.

  1. Sign into your Blogger account.
  2. Go to Design
  3. Click on the Post ‘Edit’ option
  4. Scroll down until you see option highlighted in red below. Tick the option and click on ‘Save’. Then save your blog design and view your page. Every post now has the ‘Share"’ option below it.
  • BloggerShare

How cool is that?

Update: Blogger issues with corrupt posting template

Some people cannot get the buttons to show. There is a fix that you can find here;

http://blogging.nitecruzr.net/2010/05/resetting-post-template.html

PLEASE BE CAREFUL. You need to backup your template before messing with the html code.

  1. Find the line of code
  2. Copy and paste it into a text file for safe-keeping.
  3. Delete the line and save.
  4. Confirm the deletion of the gadget.
  5. Go back into the html coding and reinsert it EXACTLY WHERE IT WAS BEFORE.
  6. Save the template again.
